The Start of Competition - CoryG Fitness

Starting at age 17

This picture marks the start of a long career of competing in sport starting at the age of 17. My decades of competing started at 17 years old at a bench only Powerlifting Meet that our High School strength coach Jim Hoover took us to.

I vividly remember Dustin Myers and myself training so hard because we knew that we were going to have to pause bench press in front of a crowd. We were going to be representing our high school in a powerlifting meet for the first time in school history. At this point I was about 10 lbs. heavier after basketball season (about 165 lbs.). My bench press during this time was doing very well for me. That being said, pause bench presses for whatever reason have always been more difficult for me, and never my strongest link.

What hooked me was the feeling of competing. What had been my biggest passion and hobby, I could not compete against others, including my training partner Dustin. Dustin had quite a day pausing 275 lbs. at a body weight of 142 lbs., which is impressive. On the other hand, I missed 275 but made 250 on a pause in high school, which was good in high school.

It all started here

This day in history for us was special. We both won our weight class, with Dustin winning the overall. The feeling of representing our school and the atmosphere of competition has really reeled me in. This was 20 years ago! We’re here in 2017 and I’ve competed in 30+ powerlifting events, 15-16 bodybuilding events, and multiple magazine shoots.

IT ALL STARTED WITH THIS EVENT RIGHT HERE.
