“If you want to be great, be great.”
– Louie Simmons
Louie Simmons is a legend
Louie Simmons had a quote on his podcast the other day talking about lifting… “If you want to be great, be great.” Don’t talk about it, show me. All this comes down to is your ability to push the doubt out of your head.
I believe that when you are in the big moments, it comes down to whether if you believe in yourself or not. I think in any sort of competition, sports or not, learning how to keep the doubt out helps to create a winning-mentality in your head.
The winning mentality
It’s similar to the Patriots or the old Chicago Bulls, or other teams that you know have the winning mentality. It’s the same way in life. If I prepare to a certain level, I expect to make “X” on the day it counts. I believe in my mind that I can step up when it counts, and that’s why this quote resonated with me. When you have the opportunity to shine, you must step up to the plate to perform.
This is also relevant in the business arena, or if you are interviewing for a job. You need to seize the day when it’s time to show up. When you put enough of these wins together you begin to build an eerie confidence, which is the winning mentality. That winning mentality becomes a way of life. Once you have adopted this mindset, you will become a freight train of momentum going in the right direction, minimizing the doubt present in your life.
Don’t put a ceiling on yourself
Even when you “lose” (which isn’t normal for you), the doubt will not creep in and consume you. It’s simply not how you operate. Having this type of mentality will help you forge through anything in life. When a situation comes up, rise up to the occasion. I’ve worked hard to teach my kids this principle, and the earlier you start to believe in yourself, the more your capabilities will seem limitless.
Louie Simmons also told a story about a seagull. There was a seagull that wanted to fly fast outside of the flock. He thought there were no limits on how fast he could fly. A lot of people didn’t believe him, but he was a supergull. He believed in his mind that there was no ceiling. By shutting out the doubt, not setting limits and developing confidence, you will experience exponential growth.
You create the doubt. You create the ceiling.
